At a press conference held at Harare Sports Club (HSC) today, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) announced a squad of 22 that will play hosts to Sri Lanka A and South Africa A in the 50-over triangular series which will be played at HSC from the 11-22 July.
There is no doubt that a huge amount of thought and deliberation went in to the side been selected with a good balance of youth and experience very noticeable and the welcome return of medium pace bowler Tawanda Mupariwa as well as all-rounder Greg Lamb who's right arm off-breaks will be more than useful in the middle overs as well as his ability to score runs down the order.
Tino Mawoyo will captain the side. After showing reasonable consistentcy at the top of the order in Zimbabwe's four Test matches, Mawoyo now has the chance to prove himself as a one day player as well.
Experienced players such as Craig Ervine and Chamu Chibhabha will provide stability and the added advantage of Chibhabha's ability to bowl genuine wicket taking deliveries at reasonable pace, gives the captain and coaching staff flexability in the top and middle order.
Some of the younger and lesser known players like fast bowler Glenn Querl and U19 player Odicious Manje have in a very short space of time caught and impressed the eyes of the selectors and have been included in the squad.
Another interesting inclusion is the talented and hard hitting top order batsman Razza Butt who is more than capable of taking the game to any bowling attack.
Butt who was born in Pakistan is currently waiting to recieve Zimbabwean citizenship but convener of selectors Givemore Makoni explained Butt's inclusion saying, "Razza has played for the A side before and we understand that his documentation is almost completed which would then allow him to be selected to play for the country at international level.
We want him to play as much Cricket as possible against quality sides like Sri Lanka A and South Africa A to keep him in touch with his game as he is a potential match winner on his day."
